Proper lifting is essential to a healthy back. The techniques for safe lifting are simple and straightforward.

One of the first things you should do prior to lifting is what is known as sizing up the load. You should size up the load to determine if you can lift the load by yourself, if you need assistance and how you intend to lift and transport the load.

When sizing up the load, you are also checking your path of travel to make sure there are no obstacles in your way. The best way to lift a load is to first directly face the object you are picking up. Do not twist or bend your back. Stand with your feet about shoulder width apart to maintain your balance. If possible, one foot should be slightly ahead of the other. Get the load as close to you as possible to significantly reduce the forces on your lower back. Bend your knees and hips, and arch your back by lifting your chin to maintain the curve in your lower back. Lift as smoothly as you can and avoid sudden and quick movements. If you need to change direction, move your feet in the direction you would like to go and prevent twisting the load and your back in the direction you want to move.

If you have sized up the load, and determine the lift requires two people in order to lift it safely. It is important that two people lifting an object work in unison. If the two people do not work together, then someone can become seriously injuried. Prior to lifting and moving the load, the two people should also decide which person will take the lead, when and in which direction they will begin moving the object and where they will be placing the object.

Think before you act. Look over the lifting task and decide hoe best to get it done. If it’s too heavy for you, don’t lift it, get help.
